Our Ethos

A small federation of small schools in South Norfolk. We are making the schools that we would have wanted to go to. By working together in collaboration, we improve one another and support each other to grow. Sunflowers are known for their resilience and symbolise hope, happiness, and growth. Our federation nurtures childrens’ academic, personal, and spiritual growth. It inspires children, staff, and parents to strive for excellence in all aspects of their life, just as sunflowers grow towards the sun and reach their full potential.

The roots, for Brooke CE VC’s church foundations, indicate that we are rooted and grounded in God's love, which is at the core of all our actions and educational philosophy. The stem represents our curriculum, which provides a strong foundation for our children across both schools to grow and thrive. The leaves symbolise our values, which drive our decision-making and behaviour. The petals are indicative of our key focuses such as DEI, careers, and compassion. Lastly, the bees and butterflies that are flying away from the sunflower represent the things that we want our children to leave us with, which are the skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to make a positive impact in the world.

Sunshine

Our Summer Term Topic is Hot and Cold. In the first half of the Summer Term, we will be exploring the differences between the U.K and Ghana along with learning how to weave using Kente Cloth. In the second half we will be exploring The Great Fire of London and building structures. Over the whole term in Science we will be learning about animals and their habitats. Our curriculum map below shows our topics over the 2022-23 academic year.

During our first week of Autumn 2, we have been planning and designing our DT project - Fruit Kebabs! We have been trying different fruits to think about what would work well for a tasty fruit snack. We discussed what combinations tasted good together and which fruits would look appetising so people would want to buy our product. Next week, we will be making our fruit kebabs and writing instructions on how to make them!

During the last week of Autumn 1, we learned all about the Hindu festival of light, Diwali. First, we learned why people celebrate Diwali by learning the story of Rama and Sita. Then we looked at how Hindu's celebrate Diwali by making Diwa lamp holders and rangoli patterns.

In Science this week, we have been learning all about every day materials. We spent time classifying different materials we found in our classroom by their properties, using special scientific vocabulary like: transparent, opaque, waterproof, absorbent, reflective and non-reflective.

This week, the Year 1 and 2 children have been using maths resources to represent numbers in different ways! Below are some photos of our amazing place value knowledge.

Computing

This half term we have focused our computational thinking on movement. We have learnt about sprites, and created motion paths to make a Fuzz move using Kodable.

Sunshine Class are moving their learning on in computing to start to learn Computer Aided Design.

Take a look at some of our finalised designs. We used Tinkercad to create models using different 3D shapes. We learnt about X, Y and Z perspectives (using the CAD Engineer's salute). Finally we printed the designs using a 3D printer.

This week, Hope from HSBC came to speak to us about how to be careful with money. Year 2 learned about budgeting by planning a birthday party with a budget of £50. Reception and Year 1 explored the story of Ed and Bunny to think about the importance of saving money and not spending it all at once. Thank you Hope for coming to see us!

Last week, the Year 2 children were learning about capacity and volume. We looked at the capacity of the containers. We then poured in an amount of liquid and recorded the volume in millilitres!

After working so hard in their SATS this week, Sunshine Class had a wonderful time at Framingham Earl participating in a Key Stage 1 multi-sports event! We practiced different ways to jump, catch and throw as well as completing obstacle course and practicing tennis skills. Here are a couple of photos from the afternoon.

This week in Art Sunshine class worked really hard to practise their weaving skills with paper before we make our own looms and weaving fabrics. The paper weaving looked amazing! Well Done Sunshine Class :)
